The Big Event 2025: Virginia Tech’s Giant Day of Service

On Saturday, April 5, 2025, the quiet streets of Blacksburg will pulse with maroon-clad energy as The Big Event returns—Virginia Tech’s record-breaking, student-run day of service that turns an entire campus into a volunteer army. Since 1983, this annual rite of spring has mobilized tens of thousands of Hokies to say “thank you” to neighbors in Blacksburg, Christiansburg and the wider New River Valley. From raking winter-weary yards to freshening playgrounds with bright paint, the projects are equal parts sweat, smiles and Hokie spirit.

Registration opens in January and closes once 10,000 spots fill—proof that service is a varsity sport here. Participants choose morning or afternoon shifts and receive a free T-shirt, snacks, safety gear and a brief on-site tutorial from student team captains. No prior skills? No problem. Whether you’re a first-year learning to mulch or a faculty ace on a power drill, every volunteer is matched to beginner-friendly tasks.

The impact is instant: last year alone, 1,200 households and 40 nonprofits received an estimated $450,000 in free labor and materials. Seniors keep their independence, parks rebound for summer sports, and local budgets stretch further—making The Big Event one of the nation’s largest single-day community-service campaigns run entirely by students.

Beyond the paintbrushes, the day is a living classroom. Students network with town leaders, alumni sponsors and fellow volunteers, forging connections that often lead to internships and lifelong friendships. Sustainability is front and center: water stations replace plastic bottles, leftover paint is recycled, and campus dining composts meal waste.

Finish your shift by 4 p.m. and you’re invited to the celebratory Block Party on the Drillfield—live local bands, food trucks and prize raffles that turn gratitude into a festival. Bring a blanket, swap stories and bask in the collective glow of a community strengthened by Hokie generosity.

Whether you’re a returning alum, a first-time volunteer or a local resident who needs help with yard work, The Big Event welcomes you. Mark your calendar, lace up your service shoes and help write the next chapter of Virginia Tech’s proudest tradition.
