Muvattupuzha River – All you need to Know

Muvattupuzha is a town located in the Ernakulam district of Kerala, India. The town is named after the Muvattupuzha River, which flows through the area. The name “Muvattupuzha” is derived from three Malayalam words: ‘Moonu’ (three), ‘Aaru’ (small river), and ‘Puzha’ (river), indicating that the Muvattupuzha River is formed by the confluence of three smaller rivers – Kothamangalam River, Kaliyar River, and Thodupuzha River.

The Muvattupuzha River is approximately 121 kilometers long and is known for its calm and serene nature. It originates from the Muvattupuzha town and flows through the region before emptying into the Vaikkom Lake and eventually the Arabian Sea.

The river has played a significant role in the history and development of the area. In the past, wooden boats were used to transport goods along the river. The Muvattupuzha Bridge, considered to be the first concrete bridge in India, was built over the river and stands as a testament to the region’s rich history.

One of the notable tourist attractions along the Muvattupuzha River is the Thommankuthu waterfalls, which draw visitors from far and wide. Additionally, a dam has been constructed across the river for irrigation purposes, supporting the agricultural activities in the surrounding areas.

However, the Muvattupuzha River has been facing the challenge of pollution in recent times. Several campaigns have been initiated to raise awareness and prevent further deterioration of the river’s water quality.
